Discover The Saint-Guilhem way

The Saint-Guilhem way is a hike which connects Aumont-Aubrac in Lozère to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in Hérault, over a distance of approximately 240 kilometers. The trail, which can be completed in about 12 days, crosses some of the most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes in France, including the Aubrac Mountains, the Gorges du Tarn, and the Cévennes National Park.

From the Via Podiensis to the north, the route joins the Voie d'Arles to the south, historically to reach Rome.

From Aumont-Aubrac

Your hike on the Saint-Guilhem way begins with a crossing of the Aubrac plateaus, known for their pastures and traditional burons (shepherds' huts). You will follow the Puy path - GR 65 to Saint Chély d'Aubrac.

The must-see stages

The trail will take you to the Rajas then to the col de Trébatut before an arrival at La Canourgue.

This is the time to discover the rest of the route: the Gorges du Tarn, the Cévennes and Grands Causses natural parks. A passage through the Cirque de Navacelles then an arrival at Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, and its remarkable abbey, will conclude your hike.

The trail will be an opportunity to discover magnificent villages such as Meyrueis, Sainte Enimie and of course Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert.

Note: after La Canourgue, a variant by Le Rozier allows you to reach Meyrueis in about 4 stages.

The natural and cultural experience

Between these villages, the Saint Guilhem way is a succession of large spaces with a very low population density and an exceptional nature.

The meadows of the Aubrac are home to a very wide variety of flowers, as well as the famous Aubrac cow ! You may also spot raptors and possibly deer or even European beavers.

The route is an old transhumance route, used by shepherds to drive their herds between the scrublands and pastures.

The arrival is in front of the renowned Gellone Abbey in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, founded in 804 and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
