Discover The Grand crossing of the Haute-Loire by mountain bike

Newly mapped and ready to ride, The Grand crossing of the Haute-Loire by mountain bike offers 600 kilometers of thrilling trails through the heart of the Haute-Loire region. Launched in spring 2021, this epic route takes full advantage of the department's extensive network of over 3,700 kilometers of marked trails.

Whether you're seeking a heart-pounding adventure or a leisurely exploration, the GTHL has something to offer to every cyclist.

Starting in Le Puy-en-Velay

Begin your adventure in the charming city of Le Puy-en-Velay. With multiple entry points and a circular route, you have the flexibility to ride clockwise or counterclockwise.

Your journey quickly leads you to the stunning Beaume waterfall, a must-see site. Continue to Le Bouchet Saint Nicolas, a key point on the Stevenson trail and renowned for its volcanic lake.

The Essential Steps

After discovering the Beaume waterfall and Lake Bouchet, you'll continue with an exploration of the captivating Allier gorges. Here, you'll encounter an even wilder nature.

In the northeast of the department, you'll traverse the Allagnon gorges and discover Blesle, one of the most beautiful villages in France. You'll then proceed with a journey through the Livradois-Forez Regional Park before reaching the Loire gorges between Bas-en-Basset and Aurec-sur-Loire.

The next part of your journey takes you to the east of the department. You'll discover Riotord, the gourmet village of Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid, before catching sight of the Meygal peaks.

At Saint-Julien-Chapteuil, you'll reach the final stages of your adventure. These will lead you to Mont Mézenc, the highest point in the department (1,753 m), before returning to Le Puy.

A sometimes technical route through varied landscapes

· Volcanic Mountains: The Mézenc massif and the Meygal forest will offer you breathtaking panoramas and technical descents.

· Gorges: The Allier, the Loire, and their tributaries have carved out spectacular gorges, providing fun trails and stunning viewpoints.

· Plateaus: The Velay plateaus, with their characteristic “sucs” (volcanic domes), allow you to ride through open and peaceful landscapes.
