The route begins in Nasbinals in the Aubrac region. Known as a key stop on the The Santiago de Compostela route, the town welcomes many hikers. As you leave Nasbinals, you’ll pass close to the Déroc waterfall and its basaltic flow.
In your first stages, you will cross the rural area of Aubrac and the Lot Valley before reaching Mende. The adventure continues through the Lozère region. You’ll pass near Mont Lozère, in the Cévennes, where you will intersect with the Stevenson Trail (GR 70), leading to Saint-Jean-du-Gard.
Towards the end of the route, the itinerary enters the Gard region. The causses give way to a landscape that now reflects the proximity to the Mediterranean. To finish your hike, you can admire the Pont-du-Gard before reaching the Rhône Valley and the magnificent city of Avignon.
The route will take you through diverse landscapes, including causses, gorges, and forests. Each stage offers new panoramas and invites you to fully immerse yourself in nature. Far from urban hustle, the Urbain V Way allows you to enjoy a hike in the heart of nature.
The path partially follows the route taken by Pope Urbain V. Along the way, you’ll discover many medieval relics, such as castles, churches, and abbeys. Upon your arrival in Avignon, you can enjoy the Palais des Papes and its incredible architecture.
